A new fraud triage team – made up of two Fraud Triage Officers and two Fraud Triage Assistants – will work to ensure victims of fraud are given an improved service.

As specialists in fraud, they will use their expertise to ensure the investigation is dealt with in the right way and with the right resources from the outset.

The aim is to ensure the best possible outcomes for victims and to make efficient use of police resources.

Given the often-complex methods used by fraudsters to manipulate people into handing over their personal details, fraud investigations often require a lot of time and effort to catch those responsible and consideration needs to be given to exploring other opportunities, not purely focused on prosecution.

Detective Chief Inspector Yvonne Dales, who leads Nottinghamshire Police’s Economic and Cyber Crime Unit, said: “As a force, we are always looking to improve our service to the public and the introduction of Fraud Triage Officers is an example of this.

“The purpose of this is to develop a new model designed to provide an improved service to victims by dealing more effectively and efficiently with their reports of fraud while also recognising and supporting any vulnerability issues to minimise the opportunities for repeat victimisation.

“We want to make sure that we are delivering a consistent service to the public with positive outcomes for victims.

“Our officers in the Protect and Prevent Team already do a fantastic job by working closely with victims to prevent more people from falling victim to fraudsters and the work of the Triage Officers will include extending this excellent service.

“The new officers also give us extra resources in a time when fraud is on the rise.

“In the last year we’ve seen a 27% increase in the number of cases reported to us and that number is expected to increase.

“We constantly review our services and are always looking to improve and I am hopeful that these new officers will help us build upon the strong foundations we have in the fraud department.”
