Notts man faces arson charge

A 59-year-old man has been charged and remanded to appear at a virtual court following a fire in Kirkby over the weekend.

Barry Wagstaff has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and affray.

The charge relates to a flat being set on fire in Kirkby, on Walesby Drive, at around 9.40am on Saturday April 4.

Two Nottinghamshire police officers were thanked for their bravery and quick-thinking after they rushed to the aid of a man trapped inside.

Officers were on the scene within minutes of the incident being reported and moved quickly to evacuate residents from adjoining properties, said a spokesperson for Nottinghamshire police.

Wagstaff was evacuated from the affected property and was discharged from hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation.

After a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday, he will appear at Nottingham Crown Court, on May 5.
