Nottinghamshire Police warning over e-scooter Christmas gifts

Nottinghamshire Police officers are urging residents thinking of gifting an e-scooter this Christmas to take note of the regulations around them.

It is currently against the law to ride a private e-scooter in any public space and this includes roads, pavements, cycle lanes and parks.

E-scooters are classed as a motor vehicle under the Road Traffic Act 1998 which means a valid licence, insurance, and tax are required to ride on the road.

You can, however, ride e-scooters on private land with the permission of the landowner .

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: “If we stop you in public, we have the power to seize your e-scooter for driving without insurance or a driving licence.

“You could be fined, receive penalty points or even face prosecution.

“We’re not here to ruin Christmas , we just want everyone to stay safe and informed.”
