Nottinghamshire man ran from police because he had cocaine

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Thursday, January 23, how Darrall Richard Birkin tried to flee when they asked him to sit in the back of a police car when they were called to a domestic incident.
Prosecuting, Robert Carr said the incident had happened on New Year’s day after officers were summoned to the incident in the Worksop area.

Hide AdHe said: “He was told to sit in the back of the police car and he then ran off down the road.”
He said that the officer had then made attempts to restrain Birkin, 26, of Ely Close, Worksop, but had struggled because of his size and strength, and at one point had been underneath the defendant on the ground.
“He threw him off with ease and he tried to run away again but. It took two of them to restrain him.
“He then admitted that he had some cocaine on him, which he produced from his pocket.”

Hide AdBirkin admitted assaulting an emergency worker and possession of a Class A drug when he appeared before the court.
Mitigating, Pamela Coxon said: “He panicked and ran off, acting in a way that was completely out of character.”
Birkin was given a 12-month community order to include 100 hours of unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay £75 in compensation, £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.
The court also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.
