Nottinghamshire drugs lout assaulted and stole £200 from stepdad, then kneed a police officer in the head

A Nottinghamshire drug addict who attacked and stole from his stepdad after he tried to get him help has been jailed for nine months.

John Podgorski, 36, of no fixed address, later assaulted a police officer during arrest.

He pleaded guilty to assault by beating, theft, assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage.

Podgorski had been visited by his stepdad at his house on July 22 2019,

His steodad was concerned with his erratic behaviour after requesting money and shouting abuse, and refusal to be taken to hospital.

His stepdad retreated to the garden and rang the police.

He was assaulted outside the house, whilst Podgorski stole £200 from his wallet, before officers attended.

Later that week, Podgorski was name checked by officers on July 25 and found to be wanted and was arrested that day.

The 36-year-old resisted and had to be been taken to the floor by officers.

While attempting to handcuff Podgorski, an officer was kneed in the head.

He was eventually restrained and transported to custody.

Whilst being kept in a holding cell, he kicked out repeatedly at safety glass causing it to become dislodged from the frame and put out of use.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown on January 24.

Police Constable Mark Shirra said: "We are happy with the result from court earlier this week. As police officers, we understand the dangers that we can face whilst serving the public. Everyone deserves to be able to do their jobs without the fear of violence."
