Mansfield woman threatened to kill her mum and ‘watch her take her last breath’

A Mansfield woman who threatened to kill her mum and “watch her take her last breath” was suffering a mental breakdown, a court heard.

Olivia Hopewell subjected her mother to a four-day campaign of death threats and verbal abuse in January, said Hannah Strawson, prosecuting.

She threatened to smash her mother's windows and said she would burn her out before her mum blocked her number, but Hopewell still bombarded her with no-caller ID calls.

She also turned up at her mum's workplace and "kicked off" on January 23.

In a statement, her mum said she believed her daughter was capable of carrying out some of what she threatened, but not the violence or damage.

She said she and Hopewell have had “trouble on and off for the last 12 years” because of her daughter’s issues with drink and drugs.

She said the situation had a “significant emotional impact” on her and she worried about informing police but decided it was necessary to protect her own wellbeing and “show her she cannot continue to treat me in this way.”

She reported suffering from sleeplessness, nausea and ongoing anxiety but stated she doesn’t want this to be the end of their relationship.

Paige Whiteman, mitigating, said Hopewell has been diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder and bi-polar disorder.

“At the time she was suffering a breakdown as she lost access to her medication,” she said.

The case was adjourned until September 30 for a psychiatric report.

Hopewell, aged 26, of no fixed abode, admitted harassment without violence when she appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 29.
