Mansfield thief jailed after abuse of probation officers

A MANSFIELD thief landed himself back in jail despite a bid to help him with his drug problem.

Ian Thomas admitted theft of a £300 CCTV camera from the Summit pub in Shirebrook on 7th February at a hearing last month.

His case was adjourned until 16th April for the probation service to assess him for a possible drug rehabilitation programme but he failed to attend Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court.

Thomas (25) was arrested and remanded in custody until a court appearance last Wednesday (16th May).

A probation officer had tried to interview him via a prison video-link in an effort to prepare a report about him - but the interview was terminated because he was abusive.

Thomas, of Nottingham Road, Mansfield, was jailed for six weeks for theft and a breach of bail.

His solicitor, Steve Brint, said he had been placed on the sex offenders’ register for life following an incident when he was aged 12.

“He was put in a secure unit. It left him emotionally drained. He turned to drink and he didn’t complete his schooling.

“His offending escalated and his dependence on alcohol - and later drugs - continued. He has issues with anger management and the probation service,” said Mr Bint.
