“He got to his car and the defendant ran at him and punched him to the left side of his head. The incident was captured by CCTV and the defendant was identified by a police officer who had met him that morning and took a picture of him wearing the same clothing.”

Lidgett, 21, of Bradmore Court, Mansfield, admitted assault by beating when he appeared before the court.

Mitigating, Amy Godson told the court: “He thinks that his drinks may have been spiked because he had little recollection of the events of that evening and he woke up in the police cells on Christmas morning.

“He says he is sorry for his actions and has no issues with the complainant. He was identified by CCTV on January 2 but wasn’t spoken to by police until February and wasn’t formally interviewed about this matter until after he had appeared in court for a criminal damage offence which took place on the same evening.

"He is a man with previous convictions but that matter dates back to when he was a youth.”

Lidgett was fined £120 and ordered to pay £100 in compensation, £85 in prosecution costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
