Mansfield granddad who punched wife in the face on night out handed £400 court bill

A Mansfield grandfather who punched his wife in the face on a night out has been landed with a £400 bill from the courts.

Clive Coombes tried to get over the fence outside the smoking area of the Cheeky Monkey bar at 1am on December 21 last year, magistrates in Nottingham were told.

When his wife came out, Coombes, aged 57, approached her aggressively while grunting abuse and punched her on the left side of her face.

She fell to the floor and he leant over her to say: "I am going to f****** batter you."

“She used no violence and lay frozen on floor as if she was terrified,” said prosecutor Hannah Strawson.

Coombes ran off but was detained and told police "he’d had a domestic with his wife.”

Ian Pridham, mitigating, said: “It is always sad when a man comes before the courts and loses his good character.”

He explained that Coombes, who has six children and ten grandchildren, has been with his wife for ten years and they always go out into the town centre at the weekend and end up with drinks in Cheeky Monkey.

“He wanted to get his wife to go home,” he said. “She was having fun and didn’t want to go. They had an awful lot to drink.

“He accepts there has been an incident he deeply regrets. There was no sign of injuries and she was more than happy to go home with the defendant afterwards.”

Coombes, aged 57, of Albert Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, admitted assault when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, March 11.

He was fined £230, with £85 costs and a £92 surcharge.
