A Mansfield driver who fled after crashing into a taxi and was followed by his victim until police apprehended him also refused a breath test even though he hadn't been drinking.

David Davies drove into the passenger side of the taxi on Debdale Lane and caused superficial damage to both vehicles on June 1, said Becky Allsop, prosecuting.

The taxi driver followed him to Morrisons' car park, then back towards Welbeck Road and Yeoman Hill Park while talking to police on the phone.

At one point he had to reverse out of Davies' way before following him to the car park at Mansfield Train Station.

Davies got out of his car and offered to exchange details but the taxi driver told him it was too late.

He drove off again but police stopped him and tried to run away before they arrested him.

Davies was "argumentative and demanding" at the police station and deliberately refused to provide any specimen of breath.

The court heard he has a previous conviction for drink driving from February 2021.

Helen Lees, mitigating, said that when the taxi driver didn't get out of his car Davies panicked and drove off.

She said the dad-of-two “got himself into a bit of a state” by worrying about his sons.

“Had he cooperated he would have gotten home a lot sooner,” she said. “He accepts in hindsight it was entirely the wrong thing to do.”

Losing his licence will affect his ability to travel to his part-time warehouse job, she added.

Davies, aged 48, of Ilion Street, Mansfield, admitted failing to provide and failing to stop after an accident when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Thursday, June 18.

He was disqualified for three years. He was fined £200 with an £80 surcharge and £85 costs.
