Mansfield dad who stabbed son ‘to the heart’ denies attempted murder – trial

A Mansfield dad who stabbed his own son “to the heart” during an argument in their garden denies trying to murder him, a jury has been told.

Anthony Kimberley, 59, returned from the pub to the home he shared with his son Gary, 39, in Forest Town, on August 2 last year.

Stephen Kemp, prosecuting, said Gary started an argument about the defendant’s grandchildren before going into the garden to cool down.

There was an exchange of words and his father attempted to strike him but instead fell to the ground.

Kimberley got up, went to the kitchen drawer, and returned with a knife which he used to stab his son three times, Mr Kemp said.

A neighbour heard a man say: “I am going to f****** kill you,” but was unable to identify who said it.

Gary hit his father “as hard as he could because he had just stabbed me” and began walking up Pelham Way, holding his chest, before he collapsed. The next thing he remembered was waking up in hospital, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

"I stabbed him three times, I don’t give a f***,” Kimberley said in a 999 call. “I wanted to kill him. I wanted to f****** kill him. He went for me. I’m not having it.”

The defendant later said he couldn’t recollect what happened because he had been drinking and claimed he was concussed, but there was no medical evidence to support this.

Gregor Purcel, defending, said Gary slapped his mum, goaded his father, and had acted aggressively under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

"He loved his son,” he said. “He didn’t intend to hurt him.”

"He stabbed his son three times, causing him life threatening injuries, with the intent to kill him," Mr Kemp told the jury on Thursday. "The only real question for you is whether he intended to kill him.

"This was a stab to the heart. Does that not give a clear indication of what he intended? Not once did he ask how his son was.

“As he was led to the police car, he said, “See you in 20 years.” Perhaps in the cold light of day he can’t bring himself to admit what he has done.”

Kimberley, of Garibaldi Road, Forest Town, denies attempted murder. The trial continues.
