A Mansfield dad had a cocaine hangover when he clipped the kerb and crashed his car after fleeing a chance encounter with his ex-partner in the town centre, a court heard.

Drinkers in a pub on Sutton Road heard a loud bang seconds before Calum Sheriff's car span past the window at 10.30pm on February 28, said Becky Allsop, prosecuting.

Outside they found the airbags deployed and the engine smoking.

When Sheriff was pulled out of the rear window, he said: "I have f***** it. I have been drinking."

He was taken to the hospital, where a blood test revealed he had 86 microgrammes of the cocaine by-product Benzoylecgonine when the limit is 10 microgrammes.

The court heard he has an aggravating relevant previous conviction for drink driving in 2017 when he received a 17-month ban.

Ian Pridham, mitigating, said the self-employed tattooist deserves credit for his plea and was cooperative with the police.

He suffers from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and has been receiving counselling after his relationship broke down in May last year.

Stress caused him to relapse into taking cocaine two days before. But he bumped into his ex-partner, decided to get away, and made the mistake of driving home “in a bit of an emotional state.”

“His life was going well until May last year,” said Mr Pridham. “From his perspective things can only get better.”

Sheriff, 37, of Mansfield Road, Mansfield Woodhouse, admitted drug driving when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Thursday, August 20.

He was fined £833, with a £333 surcharge and £85 costs. He was banned from driving for three years.
