Man stuffed drugs into pair of green socks and tried to throw them into Nottinghamshire prison

A man who attempted to throw a pair of thick green socks- stuffed with drugs- into a Nottinghamshire prison has been jailed.

John Bown, of Tichborne Street, Leicester was jailed after pleading guilty at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, March 3.

The 43-year-old was charged with possession of drugs and attempting to throw prohibited items into HMP Ranby.

He was jailed for 12 months after the incident, which happened on February 15.

He was seen by a prison officer who noticed two thick green things hanging out of the jacket arms of which Bown was carrying.

Bown then walked back in the direction that he had come from.

The officer pursued Bown for five minutes until he gave up and ‘collapsed a grass verge’ where the officer then detained him.

Bown admitted that he was going to meet someone.

Officers then seized the two packages and Bown's phone.

Following a further search, it's discovered that there two packets of tobacco are seized. They also contain a very small amount of suspected Black Mamba, a psychoactive drug.

Bown admitted that he was due to receive money for his actions.

Police Constable Qivind Merrygold, of Nottinghamshire Police, who led the investigation, said: "Attempting to smuggle drugs or other items into prison is totally unacceptable

"Anyone thinking about doing something like this should be under no illusion that we are proactively looking to stop this and bring those involved to justice."
