The man was seen carrying a gun on Harrop White Road at around 1.30pm on Thursday – two days after the UK’s terrorism threat level was raised to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.

Nottinghamshire Police said ‘armed authority was swiftly granted’ and officers headed to the scene.

Dog handler Constable Nicholas Dachtler was travelling separately to the armed response vehicle and saw a man who appeared to be carrying a rifle with a top covering most of it in Mansfield Road near to Sheepbridge Lane.

He quickly parked up and ran over to the man, removing the suspected weapon and arresting him.

The suspect was found to be in possession of an air rifle and ammunition and has since been released under investigation.

Inspector Graham Clarke, of Nottinghamshire’s Tactical Support Group, said: “We treat any firearms reports with the utmost severity and always have to consider the worst case scenario.

“This approach is even more important as we enter a heightened terrorist threat level.

“All of our armed officers are trained to know how to react to an incident involving potential weapons.

“They examine the threat to members of the public and will always put that before their own safety.

“Constable Nicholas Dachtler acted quickly and this is a prime example of how skillfully they can bring dangerous situations to a safe conclusion.”
