Man locked up after sexually assaulting girl in Nottinghamshire

A man has been locked up for over eight years after sexually assaulting a young girl in Nottinghamshire.

Mark Finney’s offending, which took place in April 2025, was uncovered when his victim confided in her mother about what had happened.

Nottinghamshire Police was informed, and an investigation was started.

Finney originally pleaded not guilty to the charge, but after police gathered crucial DNA evidence against the defendant, he changed his plea to guilty to one count of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching.

The offender, previously of Bowman Avenue, Friskney, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on 4 November and was handed an extended sentence for a total of eight years and nine months - a custodial sentence of four years and nine months, with an added four year extension period.

The 42-year-old was also placed on the sex offenders’ register and made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order that will tightly restrict his activities once he is released from prison.

Detective Constable Jessica Mcleod, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the bravery of the victim and excellent forensic work conducted by our investigators, the evidence against the defendant was undeniable.

“His appalling crime has now caught up with him and he’s behind bars where he will pose no threat to young people.

“I’d also like to emphasise just how courageous the victim was to come forward to a trusted adult. We hope the sentence provides her and her family with some comfort.

“We take reports of such matters very seriously and will investigate them thoroughly to ensure we can put a robust case to the courts.”
