Man arrested after approaching police with hammer in Kirkby

Police conducting a routine traffic stop in Kirkby underwent a ‘frightening’ ordeal when they were approached in the street by a man wielding a hammer.

The officers were parked in a car in Kingsway, shortly before 12.50pm yesterday (Wednesday, January 6) dealing with a motorist for an unrelated offence.

Moments later they heard raised voices and saw a man walking towards them with the weapon.

After drawing their tasers for protection a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and possessing an offensive weapon.

He was taken into custody and later released on bail.

Inspector Mark Disckson, district commander for Ashfield, said: “This was a frightening situation for the officers to be in but they responded in the exactly the right way – with calmness, professionalism and the measured use force.

“While this incident was resolved without injury, it is a timely reminder of the risks front-line police officers face every day they are on duty.”
