A leading barrister from the Mansfield area has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Richard Harwood QC, who grew up in Langwith Junction, received the award for services to planning and environment law decision-making.

The civil law specialist was educated at the Park Infants and Junior School, in Shirebrook, and Nottingham High School, followed by university study at Jesus College, Cambridge.

He is the son of long-time Langwith Junction residents John and Frances Harwood.

Called to the Bar in 1993, Richard became a Queen’s Counsel in 2013 following a glittering career as a junior barrister.

Specialising in planning and environmental law, he has appeared in many of the leading cases in his field and has written several textbooks.

He practices from one of the top London chambers, Thirty Nine Essex Street, and now lives with his wife and family in Winchester.

Richard (pictured) said: “It was a very nice surprise. It is pleasant to be recognised for some of the things that I have done.”
