A Kirkby woman was in the bath when her XL Bully escaped from her home and bit a little boy in the face in an “horrific” incident, a court has heard.

Aimee James' adult brother left the front door of her home on Cornerpin Drive open and the dog ran out "during that split second," on December 27 last year.

Catherine Wilson, prosecuting, described what happened afterwards as "quite an horrific incident".

James, aged 32, admitted being in charge of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control, when she appeared at Mansfield Magistrates court on Tuesday.

The dog was initially friendly towards James’ nextdoor neighbour’s child but things “suddenly changed”.

“Were it not for her reporting the incident the case would never have come before the courts,” Arjun Madahar, mitigating, said.

“The boy's family have decided not to press charges for whatever reason.

"The defendant finds herself in quite an unfortunate position. She attended the police voluntarily and admitted what happened.

“She is very sensible and very sorry that this has happened. There is no record that the dog has ever attacked anyone before.”

Mr Madahr said he was confident a contingent destruction order would suffice to impose controls on the dog rather then a destruction order.

The case was adjourned for sentencing until May 7 when an expert's report on the XL Bully will be heard.
