Kirkby burglar stole car and keys from house he’d just broken into

A Kirkby man who stole a car after taking the keys from a house he'd just burgled had been granted bail 48 hours earlier, a court has heard.

Devann Anand broke into an address on Station Street on the night of September 12 while it was occupied, Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said.

He stole house keys, a backpack and a USB stick before driving off in a Toyota Yaris, without insurance or a licence.

Anand, aged 26, of Alexandra Street, Kirkby, admitted burglary and vehicle theft after initially denying them, and pleaded guilty to related charges of making threats to cause harassment, alarm or distress, and driving offences, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Wednesday.

The court heard Anand, who potentially faces a year in custody, was granted bail by magistrates in Nottingham only two days before he committed the burglary.

“He knows the implications and how does he respond?” Mr Jerath asked. “I would argue that demonstrates his attitude towards court orders.”

Jim Buckley, mitigating, said Anand was lightly-convicted, and had no convictions at all until the middle of the summer.

"He would benefit from the assistance of the probation service," he said.

“He may well go to jail. That’s not to say he inevitably will. I would hope the court considers bail.

"It would enable him to demonstrate that these offences are a blip.”

The magistrates refused Anand's application for bail on the grounds of his previous history and ordered a probation report.

Anand was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on November 12.
