Family knife fight on Notts street left one man seriously injured

Brothers Shaban and Sufiyan Hussain and their cousin Shaad Ayub were armed with knives and "shouting and screaming at one another" on Goverton Square, on January 11, prosecutor Abi Joyce said.

When the disturbance spilled onto nearby Saxondale Road, Leona Bailey, a friend of Ayub's, jumped into a black Audi and drove at the group, clipping one of them.

After performing a U-turn, she reversed over the man, leaving him with a fractured pelvis, multiple broken ribs and internal injuries.

Bailey, 26, of Cinderhill Road, Nottingham, has admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and will be sentenced next week.

A knife, containing DNA of Shaban and Sufian, was recovered from the scene. All three defendants denied doing anything wrong, or made no comment when questioned.

The court heard Ayub has previous convictions for theft, common assault, passing counterfeit notes, possession with intent to supply crack and heroin and was on a suspended sentence at the time.

Shaban Hussain has no previous convictions, while Sufiyan has convictions for possession of an offensive weapon and cocaine and was made the subject of a community order for a public order offence three days before the incident.

Philip Plant, mitigating, said Shaban Hussain has already served 127 days on remand and that "he acted impulsively out of a misplaced sense of loyalty to his family."

Esther Harrison said Ayub's son was "present at the time and he was concerned threats were being made."

"He acted in a way that he bitterly regrets,” she said. “He took a knife from someone else and chased away someone who was threatening him."

She said he has already served the equivalent of a 16 month sentence.

Katrina Wilson said Sufiyan Hussain "was being chased," but didn't seek to use the knife in his hand.

"He accepts he shouldn't have had it with him," she said and asked for the shortest sentence possible.

Ayub, 29, of Brayton Crescent, Nottingham, Shaban Hussain, 20, of Goverton Square, Nottingham, and Sufiyan, 22, of Patchwork Row, Shirebrook, all pleaded guilty to affray and possession of knives.

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said the trio armed themselves "for no good reason" and without "any thought as to the consequences" because of a "petty argument that the court, even now, doesn't understand."

He said they were "hellbent on taking it out on one another" and "breathtakingly arrogant" because it happened in broad daylight.

"I hope it’s true that families have called a truce," he told them. “If there’s a sequel the sentences will be longer and the penalties much harsher.

"I accept family honour is an important thing. You brought shame on your family by doing what you did."

He sentenced all three to 15 months in prison.
