Drunken lout headbutted a man and broke his nose for no good reason in Eastwood pub

A drunken lout who headbutted a man and broke his nose for no good reason in an Eastwood pub found himself before a crown court judge after failing to pay £200 compensation.

Jake Beamson lunged “without warning” and placed his hands on either side of his victim’s head as he queued for the toilet in Oliver's Pub and Kitchen, on August 18, 2024.

Amelia Trem, prosecuting, said Beamson headbutted him in the face before shoving him into the toilets and had to be separated from his "wholly innocent victim" by other pub-goers.

“That is the behaviour of a thug,” Judge Michael Auty KC told him.

“It is the kind of behaviour that sickens members of the public because they don’t feel safe when they go out at night."

Beamson’s victim was taken to the urgent treatment centre in Ripley but the swelling was too severe and he had to return another day for his broken nose to be re-set.

Beamson told police he was drunk at the time and wrongly believed the man had touched his partner.

He was issued with a conditional caution but failed to pay £200 compensation and the case was escalated for summons.

Digby Johnson, mitigating, said Beamson, who has no previous convictions, “is a man who should have paid £200.”

"He lost his job as a dog handler for a private company because he lost his driving licence and wasn't eligible for benefits,” he said. “He was in a parlous state for some time.

"He is not a man who is given to violence. He is a father-of-two. Happily he has been able to show he can stay out of trouble. He has found another job.”

Beamson, aged 27, of Cornmill Drive, Somercotes, Alfreton, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court, on September 15, last year.

"Who made you the policeman of Eastwood ready to go out and mete out justice like Dirty Harry?" Judge Auty asked him.

“The fact that you didn't pay your £200 and walk away is staggering."

Beamson received a 12 month sentence, suspended for two years, with 180 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation days, at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday. He was ordered to pay his victim £500 compensation.
