Driver launched ‘fairly extreme and clearly unprovoked’ attack on man in Eastwood pub

A delivery driver who launched a "fairly extreme and clearly unprovoked" attack on a man in an Eastwood pub will be sentenced in March, a court has heard.

Jake Beamson was initially offered a police caution if he paid his victim £200 compensation, but he was unable to raise the money, said his barrister, Digby Johnson.

And when he moved address he missed vital court paperwork and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Beamson, aged 27, now of Cornmill Drive, Somercotes, Alfreton, handed himself in to police and admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court last September.

The assault happened at Oliver's Pub and Kitchen, on Nottingham Road, on August 18, 2024, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

It was night time violence and the offence was aggravated by alcohol, Mr Johnson said.

But he added that the defendant only has one previous conviction for a driving offence and deserved credit for his prompt guilty plea.

He said the father-of-two went out with friends and drank too much on that night.

"He is the perfect candidate for unpaid work," he said. "He understands what he has done. He has demonstrated he can stay out of trouble. This is his first matter of violence."

On Thursday, Recorder Rupert Jones told Beamson the assault was "fairly extreme and clearly unprovoked."

"A sentencing judge needs to have more information about you," he said.

The case was adjourned until March 12 for a probation report to be prepared and Beamson was given unconditional bail.
