A HILCOTE motorist was almost double the legal alcohol limit when police spotted him driving erratically, a court was told on Monday.
Officers on patrol in Main Street, Newton, at 11.15pm on 22nd December, saw a Ford Mondeo swerve onto the opposite side of the road.
Police stopped the car and smelled drink on driver, Anthony O’Donnell, who failed a roadside test. He was arrested and went on to give a reading of 61mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath, the limit being 35mcgs.
O’Donnell (50), unemployed, of New Lane, Hilcote, admitted drink driving and was fined £115, with £85 costs.
He received a 17-month road ban, to be reduced to 13 months if he passes a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
“It was a silly mistake. I’ve had a clean licence for 20 years,,” he told the court. “The ban will have a big effect but there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m sorry for my family.”
