A recovering junkie who was so desperate he stole a £6 joint of pork from a supermarket has been handed a suspended sentence.

Mark Caudwell (31), of Worcester Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse, admitted taking the food from Co-op in Forest Town during a hearing at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.

He also tested positive for Class A drugs.

The court was told how his benefits and his methadone prescription had stopped, but had since managed to turn his life around and was doing voluntary work as a gardener in which he was hoping to secure full-time employment.

Because of previous offences of theft, the magistrates gave him a 28-day sentence, suspended for a year, pay £6 compensation and a £40 surcharge.
