Closure order imposed on Eastwood bungalow to stamp out drug-related bad behaviour

Residents of an Eastwood street plagued by drug-related bad behaviour are set to have some respite after a closure order was made on an address.

Nottingham Magistrates Court heard an application from the police to close 144 South Street for three months following complaints.

Amir Yasseen, for Nottinghamshire Police, told the court police officers gave notice to the tenant on Tuesday, but 61-year-old John Eyre did not attend the hearing the following day.

He said there was evidence of drug-abuse and drug-dealing at the property, and that windows had been smashed.

Broxtowe Borough Council is aware of the application and has temporary accommodation ready for Mr Eyre, Mr Yaseen said.

"I hope this will break the cycle of difficulties and it sends a clear message to those attending the address,” he added.

Approving the order, District Judge Sunil Khanna said: "I think the residents in the area need a bit of respite from what is happening.

"Mr Eyre had an opportunity to get assistance. I am quite happy that the legal test has been met."

The three-month closure order under section 80 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 will remain in effect until one minute before midnight on September 9.
