Chaos at Shirebook pub as drinker pulls knife and yells “I’ll kill you all”

The drama unfolded at the town’s Gate Inn after Leigh Peet was “escorted” from the boozer following a skirmish.

Chesterfield Magistrates Court heard how Peet, 59, pulled the one-inch locking knife blade out in the street just before midnight on August 28 last year.

Pub staff - having warned onlookers to “get away or get back inside the pub” - then battled to keep irate Peet from forcing his way back in as he wedged his walking stick through the closing door.

As they pushed against the entrance Peet was heard shouting “I’ll kill you all, I’ll kill everyone”.

Prosecutor Robert Carr told magistrates how after police arrested Peet he told them he had been assaulted by a group of males inside the Gate Inn earlier that evening .

Peet’s solicitor Annette Thomas described how he had been “pinned up against a pool table by four people”.

The Langwith man suffered with a number of illnesses - including multiple organ failure, speech problems and mental health difficulties - for which he took “a number of medications”.

She said: “He didn’t take his medication because he knew he would be having a drink - he was not himself when the incident occurred.

“Although Mr Peet accepts his behaviour and that it should not have happened how it has.”

Ms Thomas added: “He is not a well man.”

Peet, of Devonshire Drive, Langwith, admitted possession of a knife in a public place.

His case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report.
