Cash machine theft suspects arrested in Mansfield

Police are questioning two men following a series of attacks on cash machines in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Officers arrested the men, aged 30 and 45, after stopping a vehicle in the Mansfield area during the early hours of this morning (Wednesday 15 April 2020).

A large amount of cash and devices believed used to tamper with cash machines were found in the vehicle along with a quantity of cannabis.

Detective Sergeant Dave Prest, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “These arrests are thanks to some excellent work of officers who spotted and then stopped a car which had been seen being driven erratically in the Mansfield Woodhouse area.

“One of the suspects is now being questioned in relation to a number of reported cash machine incidents across the force area.

“Cash machine thefts and attacks have a severe impact on communities, especially in more rural areas, who rely on these machines.”

The 30-year-old suspect is currently being questioned in connection with a number of offences including:

• Theft of cash from a cash machine at Lloyds TSB bank on Mansfield Road, Sherwood, on 3 March 2020

• A report of two men seen inserting a device into a cash machine at the Sainsbury’s store on Nottingham Road, Mansfield, on 6 February 2020

• Four reported incidents of a cash machine being tampered with at the Lloyds TSB bank at Portland Square, Sutton-in-Ashfield, between 24 January and 4 February 2020

• Attacks on a cash machine at the Lloyds bank on Church Street, Mansfield, on 28 December 2019 and between 30 and 31 December 2019

• An attack on a cash machine at the Natwest bank on Church Street, Mansfield, between 30 and 31 December 2019

• Theft from a cash machine at a Sainsbury’s store in Ripley, Derbyshire, on 6 February 2020

Both suspects were arrested on suspicion of going equipped to commit theft, with the 30-year-old man also arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
