Boozed-up Mansfield student attacked King’s Mill Hospital staff

Liam Millar squeezed past the paramedic in an ambulance bay at King's Mill Hospital just before 1am on May 10 and asked him ‘are you going to arrest me?’.

Prosecutor Becky Allsop described how the 20-year-old followed the paramedic and ‘got into his face’ before threatening to knock his head off.

When a security guard intervened, Millar said: "I want to get in the f****** ambulance. My brother's in there and I want to see him."

He punched the guard in the left side of his face and was arrested. He later told police he had drunk 750mls of vodka and lemonade at a friend's house before waking up at the hospital.

"He didn't know why he was at the hospital," said Ms Allsop.

Vicky Clarson, in mitgation, said Millar had no previous convictions and deserved credit for his early guilty plea.

He had been drinking with his friends in their garden and, in addition to the vodka, he also downed a bottle of Prosecco and a shot glass of gin, she told magistrates.

“He was vomiting and appeared to be in and out of consciousness,” Ms Clarson said. “He planned to get a lift home with a friend. He walked into the wall and knocked himself out and an ambulance was called.

“He doesn't recall the incident involving the two complainants. He can only put it down to having far too much to drink. He is very remorseful. He spent 12 hours in a police cell. His family were very worried about him.

“He was diagnosed with shock by his GP who gave him advice about alcohol consumption.”

The IT student is in his final year and hopes to work in cyber security after university, Ms Clarson said, adding: “There don't appear to be any ongoing issues regarding alcohol consumption.”

Millar, 20, of Sanders Avenue, admitted two counts of assaulting an emergency worker when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

He received a 15-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work.

Millar was ordered to pay £100 compensation to each of his victims.
