Crime commissioner election fails to ignite Mansfield's interest

The police and crime commissioner election in Nottinghamshire has once again failed to capture the public's interest, with fewer people voting in Mansfield than any other district.

Just over a fifth of eligible people across the county went to the polls yesterday on average, with a return of 21.8 per cent.

But from the eight districts, Mansfield had the lowest return of just 18.02 per cent.

Bassetlaw was not far behind with 19.32 per cent.

Ashfield fared better with 21.48 per cent.

The highest turn out was seen in Rushcliffe where more than 27.47 per cent of people voted.

However, the turn out is still an improvement on the first commissioner elections in 2012, when just 16.4 per cent of the people in Nottinghamshire voted.

The count is now taking place and the result is expected this afternoon, Friday, May 6.

Current commissioner, Paddy Tipping is hoping to regain his seat, beating off the challenge of four other hopefuls.
