Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Tuesday, January 26, how Kathy Irons, 34, of Welbeck Street, Creswell, had been tracked down by her car registration number after stealing chicken pieces from a Spar shop in Clowne.

Prosecuting solicitor Rod Chapman said: “She placed chicken pieces in her pocket and then made her way around the store selecting items which she paid for.

“She didn’t pay for the chicken pieces in her pocket and was followed out of the store and she said she knew nothing about what the shop worker was saying to her.

“She got in her car and left but was traced through her registration number on the vehicle and CCTV showed her putting the chicken pieces in her pocket.”

Irons told police she had not intended to steal when she went to the shop but ended up taking the chicken thinking no one would notice.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on September 24, last year.

Defence solicitor Steve Brint told the court Irons was struggling with an alcohol habit which amounted to nine-litres of cider a day, seven days a week.

But Mr Brint added that she has now reduced her alcohol intake to one three-litre bottle of cider a day instead of drinking three, three-litre bottles a day.

Magistrates adjourned the case until February 1 to consider a probation report and to provide a sentence that may also help the defendant deal with her drinking problems.
