Council website states: ‘There is currently no disruptive snow forecast for Derbyshire’

Derbyshire County Council – which is responsible for gritting – tonight states on its website: “There is currently no snow likely to cause disruption forecast in Derbyshire.”

The surprise message, which can be seen here, comes as many areas of Derbyshire are white-over after the heaviest snow of the winter so far fell in the county.

There are reports of “treacherous” driving conditions on roads across the area with traffic at a standstill and cars stuck in many places.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said the force had received a spike in calls about hazardous roads.

No major incidents have been reported, however.

Emergency services are urging drivers and pedestrians to remain extra vigilant.

A spokesman for Derbyshire fire service said: “Snow is affecting many roads and making driving extremely hazardous so please consider your journey tonight.”

Residents have raised concern about an apparent lack of gritting in the county.

However, the county council said its gritters have been working on 48 routes over the last 12 hours to help keep Derbyshire’s roads clear.

A yellow ‘be aware’ alert of snow lasting until 6am tomorrow has been issued by the Met Office.

A Met Office spokesman said a total of up to 15cm of snow could fall in the county and added: “The public is advised to take extra care.”
