Council pleas for patience on plans

The issue was raised at a meeting of Nottingham City Council’s Bulwell and Bulwell Forest Area Committee.

The Jack Barker company has been given planning permission for three years to bring the project to fruition and much of the work remains to be done.

Coun John Hartshorne, a Labour member for Bulwell ward on the city council, said bad weather earlier this year had put the programme ‘way back’. Effectively, a full year had been lost.

He pointed out that the company wanted to complete the project as a prime amenity for local people.

“All they are asking is for the forbearance of golfers and members of the public who use the park,” said Coun Hartshorne.

He said the top end of the site near the Rolls-Royce boundary was finished and had been covered with poppies, making for a sea of red during spring and summer.

But resident John Millington, who regularly walks in the area, claimed that thousands of tonnes of rubbish was being piled up on the site and he suspected that this might comprise objectionable material such as scrapings from roads.

“It was never meant to be a landfill site,” said Mr Millington at the meeting.

But James Tilford, of the council’s parks department, denied the claim. He said the content of lorries travelling to the site was scrupulously vetted and a document had to be produced to say what was being delivered.

Committee chairman Coun Jackie Morris (Lab) also from the Bulwell ward, said: “We are on top of this and making sure that the work is of an acceptable standard.

“But I appreciate that it is causing a lot of concern in Bulwell.”
