Council chief marks travellers history month

A council leader has raised the flag to mark Gypsy, Roma and Travellers History Month.

Yvonne Woodhead, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, hoisted the Romani Gypsy ensign on the riverbank.

It is estimated that there are at least 3,000 gypsies and traveller residents in the county living in houses and on sites.

The theme for this year is Our Community, highlighting the fact that gypsies and travellers have been part of the Nottinghamshire area for hundreds of years.

A project in schools throughout the country is raising awareness of gypsy, Roma and traveller heritage and culture.

The play Crystal’s Vardo, about a gypsy girl who has been bullied at school, is being staged at Retford and Tuxford Academy.
