Council boss brands unitary council decision a '˜disaster' for Ashfield

Jason Zadrozny, Ashfield District Council leader said that Nottinghamshire County Council's vote in favour of getting rid of District Councils in the County will be a 'disaster for places like the Ashfield District.'

The vote ensured that the Council will now be making a formal case to get rid of the seven District Councils It is recommended that there will be one ‘super-council’,  covering the whole of the County.

Councillor Zadrozny, who voted to oppose the motion, is now calling for a referendum, claiming that Ashfield Independents will fight the plans ‘tooth and nail.’

Coun Zadrozny said: “Today is a sad day for politics in our County.  Localism has simply gone out of the window.  The County Council are talking about providing services ‘all under one roof. This will mean that if the Conservatives get their way - our Council will be a remote outpost which will lead to a deterioration of services.”

“There is now nothing stopping for example, Mansfield District Council or Broxtowe District Council working to amalgamate and create our own Councils.  We share some services already  The Conservatives in Nottinghamshire are blaming the lack of money but it is their Government who have done more damage to our District Councils since they were created in 1974.”

Coun Zadrozny claimed at the meeting that the reorganisation of Local Government across Nottinghamshire could cost well over £100million.

This is not included the rebranding - which is set to cost over £30million alone.

He added: “This is an ill thought, grubby short sighted attempt to change the way our Council works for political gain.  County Council Leader Kay Cutts claims that the people of the County will ‘wholeheartedly support her plans’ - I say ask the people and therefore there should be a referendum so that local people can have their voice heard.  After all, they are the people that matter.””The vote ensured that the Council will now be making a formal case to get rid of the seven District Councils It is recommended that there will be one ‘super-council’,  covering the whole of the County.
