Coun John Wilmott calls for more to be done to end loneliness in Ashfield

That’s the view of Councillor John Wilmott, who is also calling for a conference to discuss the issues.

Coun Wilmott said: “There are a number of groups doing good things but there needs to be a focus on this issue.

“All organisations with specfic services should work more closely together.”

And he added: “People need to make sure elderly are because even if they say one thing, it might not be the case.”

There are a number of groups for the elderly in Hucknall, including the Beauvale Court Residents group, which has carpet bowls, bingo, coffee mornings, and knitting and sewing groups.

There’s a Dominoes Club at the Watnall Road Community Centre, and a Happy Hour at the John Godber Centre, in Ogle St, Hucknall for the over 65s.

Hucknall and District University of the Third Age is popular, as is the Hucknall Pensioners Association, which meets at the Watnall Community Centre, Watnall Road. The centre also pays host to the Hucknall Senior Forum and an over 60s club.

Brenda Blount (78), of the Hucknall Pensioners Association, says her group meets once a fortnight, and regularly has guest speakers, day trips and other events.

She said: “We have about two dozen members and try to have subjects that are relevant and interesting.

“People come along and bring friends and we talk so it’s all about meeting people and not being lonely.”
