Costa cafe sparks mixed reaction

A spokesman for the company said: “Our new store on the High Street is not a joint enterprise between Costa and Tesco Express.”

Despite this confirmation that Costa is coming to Hucknall has sparked a mixed reaction from the townsfolk.

Whilst many will be welcoming the big name to the High Street and hope it will attract more national chains, others are fearful it could disrupt trade and threaten their competing business.

Work on the former Fulton’s shop is currently being carried out with a view to a February opening.

“It is good news for the town as it means another shop occupied,” said Ken Robinson, chairman of Hucknall’s Tourism and Regeneration Group. “I don’t think it will affect current businesses as they have loyal customers and their own clientele.”

Haart sales negotiator, Tom Mawer, said his colleagues are looking forward to having Costa as neighbours.

“It’s good news for the town and will be very convenient for us and maybe it will attract other big names to the town.”

Other cafe owners are a little cautious of the news though. The Sweet Cafe has been open over six years and whilst recognising the positive elements of Costa’s arrival, they are a little concerned that they could take trade away.

“They are a big player which is good for the town, but personally they have the potential to take trade away from my business,” said owner, Mark Allison.”I have to hope that my customers will remain loyal but I also believe what we offer is better and more varied.”

Helen Plumb opened Vanilla Coffee House on nearby Titchfield Terrace last Autumn and despite initially being apprehensive towards the Costa move, she is now confident that her personal service will see her through.

“I think Costa will attract a younger clientele and I am building up my own customer base,” said Helen. “The price difference is also significant as Costa’s prices are much higher than mine.”
