Coroner calls for road improvements after motorcycle death crash

David Neil Bacon, aged 58, of Coronation Road, was involved in a collision with a car on the A611 between Annesley and Hucknall on 16th June last year.

The married father of two died at the scene when his 1300 cc Yamaha motorbike was in collision with a silver Kia Venga car, driven by Alan Manners of Bulwell.

The inquest at Nottingham Coroner’s Court heard the bike hit the car which had emerged from an exit route of an archery club which had been obscured by vegetation.

Accident investigator PC Stuart Bird said, on the day of the accident, grass verges at the point of the exit were 1.5m high and obstructed vision for both vehicles.

There had been an operation to clear away the vegetation just days after the crash, to improve visibility near the point of impact.

Assistant coroner Maria Mulrennan recorded a conclusion that Mr Bacon had died as a result of a road traffic collision.

She said she would consider writing to the county council and the archery club to highlight concerns arising from Mr Bacon’s death.

She said she was satisfied that efforts appeared to have been made to make the junction safe at the time after the collision.

But she remained concerned there were conflicting accounts about whether the junction was still regularly in use and whether or not it was still a preferred exit or entrance to the archery club.

There were no road markings or warning signs to indicate a road entrance.
