Conservationists trying to protect for the future

Malcolm Hodgkinson of Bulwell’s Woodhall Farm, which borders the rear of the site off Blenheim Lane, has a number of concerns about the proposals by developers Muse.

Not only is he worried about the further flooding implications to the area and the worsening traffic congestion but the environmental impact too.

Bulwell Wood is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Mr Hodgkinson has three ponds at his family farm.

“We have very rare white claw crayfish in our ponds and I am extremely concerned about the impact the development could have on them,” explained Mr Hodgkinson who is part-owner of the land.

“These are natural ponds and a conservation area and my fear is that the movement of the shale, which is present in the ground, could affect the water course and toxins could kill off the crayfish.

“All our conservation areas are open to schools and the public for everyone to enjoy and I want to protect the land for many future generations.”

Mr Hodgkinson’s fears for the environmental impact are echoed by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust (NWT) who have also lodged formal objections to the plans.

“The Wildlife Trust also have concerns over the potential impact on a number of important and protected species,” said a spokesman. “We have recommended that further survey work be completed so as the full impacts of the proposed development site can be taken into account.”
