Chairman Sandra Prewett welcomed 41 members and eight visitors to February’s meeting at St John’s Church. Maureen Brassington read minutes and Pam Edwards gave a finance report. Raffle winners were Jean Walker, Joyce Handford, Enid Bircumshaw and Jean Bullimore. Mrs P. Littlewood gave a talk about writing historical novels and Pam Edwards thanked her. Ann Pike and Nona Clark served refreshments.

St John’s Church

On Thursday week there were WeightWatchers’, children’s fun day planning, and church council meetings. Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. Mrs Sue Stamenkovic led Sunday week’s morning worship and Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Readers were Mrs Janet Lomas and Jill Moakes. Junior church was led by Vicky Young and Janine Burton. Mrs Otter and Mrs Ann Cope served refreshments. Mr David Smith led evening worship and Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. Readers were Mrs Stamenkovic and Mrs Sue Herrington. Stewards were Mr Peter Stamenkovic and Jill Moakes. On Monday week there were meetings of Ashfield Childminder’s Association, a Pilates class, Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society. Yesterday week there were carers’ and toddlers’ group, Scrabble and zumba meetings. Last Wednesday there were art and keep fit classes and CAMEO Group’s craft night.

Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. Blair Hutchison was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Readings were by Paulette Billson-West and the Rev Charles Claydon and speaker was Arnie Kells. Xtreme Sunday School was led by Lucy Chalk, Matt Tomlinson, Michelle Hutchison and April Hunt.

URC

The Rev Stephen Ward conducted Sunday week’s service and organist was Mrs Helena Wain. Vestry steward was Mrs Crystal Gibson and door steward Mrs Elspeth Clunie also gave a reading. Mrs Ellen Hartshorne arranged flowers given by Mrs Ruth Crook. Jessica Ross and Rosie Stone took the offertory and Mrs Rachel Ross led family church. Mrs Mavis Churchman and Mrs Clunie served refreshments. The Minister, the Rev Colin Bones, chaired the annual church meeting. David Parnell and Mally Wainwright were instructors at Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing meetings. Tracey Cranfield led 1st (Sutton) Brownies’ meeting.

Sutton Centre

At Under Fives’ Playgroup puppets were used to tell a story about a zoo. Children sang numeracy songs about animals and had role play of visiting a vet. ‘Cages’ were made and used to illustrate sizes and children did animal-type movements. They talked about what pets they would like and some showed photographs of their pets. A walk into town involved noticing shapes of things and outdoor play included basket ball and skittles. A Ladybird certificate was given to Katie Waring and Tia Shah celebrated her fourth birthday.

Salvation Army

Sylvia Linnell, Lt Matthew Brown, Brian and Janet Sawyer and Alan and Margaret Wright served meals at Wednesday week’s lunch club meeting. Janet Sawyer led the over 60s meeting. On Thursday week Jenni Ross led Bible study. On Sunday week Lt Brown led both meetings. Helen Waters, Lt Brown, Andrew Salmon and Alan and Margaret Wright led Little Treasures’ parents’ and toddlers’ meeting on Monday week.

Last Tuesday week minister Larry McGuire, of USA, visited the church as part of his going to congregations around Britain. He attended Peacemakers’ Youth Group where parachute games were played. Helpers were Barbara Woodhouse, Marianne Rowe and Helen Kemp. At an open meeting later Larry McGuire spoke about his role in the church in USA and plans for future sessions with a theme Leading Congregations in Mission, in the Britain. On Wednesday week there was a coffee morning and nearly new sale and a youth activity in the evening. On Friday week Stewart and Barbara Woodhouse hosted a coffee evening that raised more than £50 for church funds. Do Not Be Afraid, was the theme for Sunday week’s communion led by Barrie and Janice Fox. Ralph Holmes was pianist and Hazel Holmes took the offering. Refreshments were provided by Ralph and Hazel Holmes.

4th Guides

Chocolate badgework at Monday week’s meeting included learning about its origins and quizzes. Leaders were Liz Belshaw, Trish Baines and Joanne Betteridge.

New Cross Church

The Rev Adrian Butt celebrated Holy Communion on Wednesday week. Hilary Bostock led Pins and Needles Group’s meeting and Thursday week’s card craft session. There was a prayer meeting later. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting and Jane Selby led a children’s glee dance club meeting. On Saturday week there was a lunch for Giving Campaign Group. The Rev Frank Crowther celebrated Sunday week’s Holy Communion. Steve Cotterill led Morning Prayer and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Adrian and Jayne Self and steward was Bernard Brown. Mr Crowther gave readings, with Joyce Handford, and took the offertory, with Derek Smith. Kevin Frear and Derek Smith served refreshments. Julie Cotterill led Mothers’ Union’s Toddlers’ Group session on Monday week. Jane Selby led a children’s drama group meeting. Yesterday week there was a community choir practice.

Aspley Court

At yesterday week’s meeting domino winners were Barbara Bunkle, Gwen Flook and Joan Ellis. Members played bingo after lunch. Game winners were Joan Ellis, Dorothy Jones, Beryl Thompson and Brenda Jellyman. A birthday card and gift were given to Christine Lee.
