Townswomen’s Guild

Chairman Sheila Galert welcomed 44 members and two visitors to November’s meeting at St John’s Methodist Church. Secretary Maureen Brassington read minutes and Pam Edwards gave a finance report. Speaker Mr David Coleman’s topic was the lives and conditions of coal miners in the early 20th century. Raffle winners were Susan Robinson, Betty Keech, Pam Bowler and Jean Riley. Christine Sharpe and Nina Clarke served refreshments. Members recently had an outing to Chatsworth House.

3rd Brownies

At Thursday week’s meeting members made a birthday card and sang to Angj Brooks to celebrate her birthday. Ball skills, skipping and hula hooping were practised and games played. Other leaders were Liz Guy and Gemma Trueman.

St Mary’s Church

The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided and Gill James preached at Sunday week’s Eucharists. Sheila Oscroft led intercessions at the later service. Junior church members and leaders met at Magdalene Centre. Gill James and Sheila Oscroft led and preached at two afternoon memorial services. Refreshments were served after each service.

Sutton Centre

At Under Fives’ Playgroup Ladybird certificates for good behaviour was given to Abbie-Mai Ellis and Keira Haywood. Leo Shay-Lee and Emma Jessop-Wragg celebrated their birthdays. Activities about snow and ice included watching The Snowman DVD, singing, painting, making ‘snowflakes’ and freezing things in ice. There was also a drama called A Winter Day.

Community of Christ

At Peacemakers’ Youth Group’s meeting last Tuesday week Helen Kemp arranged making Christmas cards. Helpers were Marianne Rowe, Barbara Woodhouse and Celia Roddis. Celia Roddis led worship at the women’s meeting and Betty Fowler gave a flower arranging demonstration. Brenda Waring provided refreshments. On Wednesday week there was a coffee morning and a Performing Art Workshop. Pastor Barbara Woodhouse chaired the annual business meeting on Thursday week and church officers were elected. A stall at Portland Square on Friday week raised more than £150 and a jumble sale in the evening raised £65 for church funds. At Sunday week’s communion Marianne Rowe ministered and the theme for Advent Sunday was Hope. Organist was Ralph Holmes, and Hazel Holmes welcomed the congregation and received the offering. Barbara and Graham Wilson provided refreshments.


The Rev Stephen Ward conducted Sunday week’s service. Organist was Mrs Helena Wain. Door steward Mrs Ellen Hartshorne gave a reading and arranged flowers in memory of Mr Laurie Wain. Mr Bill Gibson gave a reading and Mrs Rachel Ross led a prayer and family church. Jessica Ross lit the Advent candle and with Rosie Stone, Daniella Budd and Abbie and Lauren Ellis took the offertory. The Minister, the Rev Colin Bones, chaired December’s church meeting.

Salvation Army

Janet Sawyer led Wednesday week’s over 60s meeting and with Maj Peter Disney and Sylvia Linnell served meals at the lunch club meeting. Maj Dawn Disney led Sunday week’s morning meeting. Members attended Mansfield Headquarters for a united Christingle service in the evening. Maj Dawn Disney supervised Monday week’s parents’ and toddlers’ meeting.

Aspley Court

At yesterday week’s meeting a raffle raised £17 for club funds and winner was Joanna Crump. Members had bingo after lunch. Game winners were Dorothy Papworth, Mary Armstrong, Doreen Lewis and Grace Wall. A birthday card and gift were given to helper Sylvia Hall.

Brierley House

Mrs J. Connah and Mr M. Wood were bingo callers. Game winners were Mesdames M. Rolley, J. Mansfield, P. Lovatt, D. Mitchell, I. Leach, E. Moore, D. Goddard, P. Dykes, J. Gregory, J. Wood, E. Hill, C. Stevenson, V. Morrison, M. Johnson, E. Pickering and Connah and Messrs D. Johnson, Wood, J. Moore, A. Morrison, H. Mitchell and E. Lovatt. Raffle winners were Mesdames Leach, Lovatt, Mansfield, Mitchell and J. Swain and Mr Morrison.

St John’s Church

Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. The Minister, the Rev Alan Boyd, conducted Sunday week’s morning service and celebrated Holy Communion. He dedicated a banner made by Mrs Joyce Martin. Mrs Ann Cope and Mrs Sue Stamenkovic read lessons and Miss Lesley Moakes assisted with communion. Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Mr Andy Leam led the evening service. Mr John Whitehead, Mrs Mary Aldous and Mrs Vera Hocking read lessons. Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. There were meetings of Ashfield Childminders’ Group, Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society on Monday week. The minister served communion at Monday Christian Group’s meeting. There was a carers’ and toddlers’ meeting and a zumba class yesterday week. Mapplewells Primary School had rehearsals and a Christingle service. At the community room there was an art class last Wednesday. Members of CAMEO Group had a meal at The Watermill.

New Cross Church

Holy Communion was celebrated on Wednesday week. Hilary Bostock led a Pins and Needles Group meeting. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting. Jane Selby led the children’s glee dance club. On Saturday week there was a children’s breakfast club session. The Minister, the Rev Alan Boyd, led Sunday week’s Christingle service and the Rev Michael Dobbs celebrated Holy Communion. Steve Cotterill led Morning Prayer and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Adrian and Jayne Self and steward Bernard Brown took the offertory with Derek Smith. The Rev Frank Crowther and Alan Topley read lessons. Joyce Handford and Derek Smith served refreshments. On Monday week Norma Mitchell and Julie Cotterill organised a toddlers’ group meeting. Jane Selby led a drama group meeting. Yesterday week there was a community choir practice. Members of the choir gave a concert at Rumbles, Vicar Water, New Clipstone, on the Saturday.

Zion Baptist Church

Helen Tomlinson and the worship team led Sunday week’s worship. Blair Hutchison and Nathan Gull were in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Alice Bates read The Gospel of John, Chapter One, Verses 12 – 14. Speaker was Les Barnard. See for more details of services. At Eastside Centre SureStart ran a session and WNC, a course last Monday week. Early Start had a meeting last Tuesday week. On Wednesday week WNC ran a course and there was an Activity Club meeting. There were meetings of Kerry’s Can Can and junior and senior youth clubs on Thursday week and a SureStart meeting, on Friday week. Youth club members prepared for a production called Christmas Cracker on 23rd December.

4th Brownies

At yesterday week’s meeting members made angel-theme pictures, using their hand prints and glitter. It was planned to laminate the pictures to make placemats. There was also a show-and-tell session which included showing various certificates. Leaders Catherine Graves, Tina Duncalf and Claire Nelson were helped by Young Leaders and Guides.
