‘The Challenge of Change’ was the theme of a service of Morning Worship on Sunday week. Rev June Palmer led the service, gave the sermon and read the Gospel. Bible readings were by Mr Ian P. Hill and Mrs Kiltie Hill. The collection was taken by Paddy Chi. The Rt Rev Humphrey Southern, Bishop of Repton, gave the address at the second Lent Evensong for the Bolsover and Staveley Deanery in Shirebrook Church. The theme of the address was, ‘I am the gate for the sheep’.

Methodist Church

Sunday week’s evening worship was led by Mrs. Wendy Ince from Mansfield, who led prayers and organised the service. Mrs Ince introduced Mrs Ann Jones, a new preacher in training. Mrs Jones read from the Bible and spoke about moving on in faith. Stewards were Robert Fennell and Sue Hall. Refreshments were served after the service.

Julie Bonsall welcomed members and collected subscriptions at Shirebrook Leisure Centre on Wednesday week. Table games were organised by Jo Sutherland and Dot Hindley. Sharni Kissane and Julie Bonsall served refreshments. Raffle winners were Jo Sutherland, Julie Howl, David Butler, Ada Askew, Audrey Doyle, Sheila Garland, Alan Tudor and Christine Tennant.

Tuesday Dance

Members were welcomed to a sequence dance at Shirebrook Miners Welfare Social Centre yesterday week by Mrs M. Blakemore. Mrs M. Goodall organised and led the dancing. Mr P. Goodall provided the music.

Early Birds ASC

Becky Fletcher and Pauline Chapman supervised children creating flowers in a pot for Mothering Sunday.

New Bassett House

Staff recently accompanied a group of residents to a memory clinic organised by Dr E. Barratt. Residents have also played dominoes, bingo and visited the hairdresser.

Julie Bonsall welcomed members on a daily basis to Shirebrook Leisure Centre Monday week to Thursday week inclusive. Members took part in chair based exercises as part of the ‘Wellness Programme.’ Details of how to access the programme are available from Julie Bonsall 748313.

Chit Chat Club

Doreen Gough welcomed members and collected subscriptions at Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week. Members played bingo with caller Maureen Gough and held a raffle where Audrey Draycott won 4/5 prizes. Refreshments were served by Maureen Gough and Audrey Draycott.

Early Birds DN

Babies recently played with noisy toys, blocks in sand and toy animals in water. Tactile play was with flour and cars and imaginative role play was with dolls and clothes. Threading butterflies were used to improve fine motor skills with push along walkers being used to improve gross motor skills. Toddlers played with fish, boats, fishing nets and number elephants in water and rice, brushes, cereals and a tea set in tactile play. Pre-school children used Uno blocks to build a pyramid, created seaside pictures and played outdoors with a parachute and in the sensory garden.

Self Help Group

Mrs G. Mee welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall on Wednesday week where she also collected subscriptions and called the bingo. The room was prepared ahead of the meeting by Diane Graves, Eva Hayes, Iris Cooke and Sylvia Garton. Members played bingo, a game of Sticky 13, held a table top raffle and took part in a general knowledge quiz which was won by Janet Edson. Madge Griffiths celebrated her 80th birthday and was presented with chocolate and a card. Refreshments were served by Janet Edson, Madge Griffiths and Sylvia Garton.

Mr M. Fletcher hosted a games night on Monday week evening. The pool match winner was Kevin Brooks with ‘Dazza’ Hickin winning the dominoes match and Rob Larby the darts match.

Grange Care Home

The Rev June Palmer conducted a hymns service on Monday week afternoon. Residents from the nursing lounge played dominoes and cards, held a ‘chit and chatter’ session, and a hands and nails pamper session. In the residential lounge, residents helped to create a poster for St Patrick’s Day, took part in one to one activities and played bingo. In the Hamilton Suite, residents took part in a quiz, watched the Laurel and Hardy comedy, ‘Flying Deuces’ and attended a watercolour painting session. Activities were led by Mandy Lindley and Natasha Westwood.

Sports Club

Coaches and volunteers welcomed 15 members to Shirebrook Leisure Centre on Thursday week where they took part in gym work, games of football, boxing and a two on two football activity. Bookings are now being taken for a visit to Liverpool Football Club on Sunday 1st June. The visit will include a stadium and museum tour led by a player from Liverpool Football Club. Richmond Care Home
A dominoes knock-out competition was won by Audrey Negus. Residents have almost completed a wall display for Mothering Sunday and have begun preparations for their Easter bonnet parade which will be held on Good Friday at 10.30am. All welcome. Residents held a sing-a-long to the music of Eva Cassidy.

Christian Centre
Maggie Morris welcomed visitors to the Nite-Lite drop in session on Wednesday week evening. The Coffee Brook café was open on Thursday week and Friday week mornings. Amanda Pell led PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens) on Thursday week evening. Pastor P. Hellewell led and spoke at the Sunday Celebration meeting when he took as his title, ‘Perseverance.’ Mrs A. M. Hellewell, Amanda Pell and Tracey Engyel led the worship.

Salvation Army

The Home League members meeting yesterday week was led by Mrs Eunice Smith. Ladies had Bible readings, sang and shared refreshments. Children were welcomed to Buddies playgroup meeting on Thursday week by Maj Ina Neill, Dorothy Plant, Diane Cooper and Marian Hicks. ‘St Patrick’s Day’ was Jean Leadbeater’s title when she led the Sunshine Club on Friday week afternoon. Members celebrated Maj Margaret Wardley’s birthday, sang and listened to music. ‘The Butler’ was the chosen film at a film night held on Saturday week evening. A two course meal was served after the film. Maj Neill and Miss Leadbeater organised and led the Sunday week JAM Club meeting. Maj Neill led the Sunday week Salvation meeting when she took as her title, ‘Who do you think he is?’ The Messengers group members sang. Volunteers served at four recent coffee mornings and in the charity shop.
