Floral Art Club

Linda Smith from Nottingham demonstrated flowers from Italy on Thursday week at Shirebrook library. Arrangements included the Roman Forum with pillars of white lilies, the opera at Verona, a gondola ride and an ice cream sundae with frosting in a large glass. Linda Holmes opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests. Mrs Ann Mills gave the vote of thanks. Mrs W. Kerry organised the sale of flowers.

New Bassett House Residents have played dominoes and bingo, visited the hairdresser and made Christmas cards to send out to their families.


The Cluster KS1 Gymnastics Festival was held when 60 KS1 students from Whaley Thorns, Model Village, Brookfield and Stubbin Wood Primary Schools attended an afternoon of gymnastics activities at the Academy.

Chit Chat Club

Mrs D. Gough welcomed members yesterday week to Shirebrook Village Hall. Refreshments were served by Miss M. Gough assisted by Mesdames A. Toon, M. Howard and S. Garton. Members played bingo with caller M. Gough and held a raffle won by D. Gough.

Ashbourne Court

B’ Team won the Monday week’s darts match with ‘A’ Team winning on Thursday week. The Friday week skittles match ending in a draw. Joyce Jarvis and Les Bayliss won yesterday week’s general knowledge quiz. Maureen Greig prepared and served a luncheon to residents on Wednesday week. A new monthly breakfast club is to be introduced on Friday mornings.

Artists Group

Mrs B. Potter welcomed members to Shirebrook Miners Welfare Social Centre yesterday week. Refreshments were served.

Self-Help Group

A room was prepared at Shirebrook Village Hall by Mesdames I. Cooke, G. Mee, E. Hayes and D. Graves ahead of the members meeting on Wednesday week. Ladies held a table top raffle, played bingo with caller Mrs Mee and took part in a general knowledge quiz. Refreshments were served by Mesdames M. Griffiths, I. Cooke and A. Kane.

Staff and Social Club

Mr M. Fletcher hosted a games night on Monday week. Darts winner was James Pinnock and the dominoes winner was Harold (Dazza) Hicken.

Grange Care Home

A Christmas Gala with raffle, tombola stall, food and refreshments is to be held 2-4.30pm on Sunday 9th December. Everyone is welcome. Hamilton Suite residents have held a sing-a-long to Christmas songs, played dominoes and card games. A nail care session was held for Nursing Unit residents who have also been watching Christmas movies. Bingo and a weaving activity were held in the residential lounge. An exhibition of craft work by resident Janice Cooper was held in reception on Thursday week morning alongside a sale of Christmas cards. Activities were led by Mandy Lindley and Natasha Westwood.

Sports Club

Activities for 20 members on Thursday week at Shirebrook Leisure Centre included basketball, boxing, football, tag rugby and a round robin section. The on-site code of conduct was covered with members and two new coaches from Creative Coaching Services were welcomed.

Tuesday Dance

Mrs M. Blakemore welcomed dancers to Shirebrook Miners Welfare Social Centre yesterday week. Dancing and music were organised and led by Mr and Mrs J. Stringfellow.

Salvation Army

Maj Ina Neill led singing, anecdotes and poems at yesterday week’s Home League members meeting. Refreshments were served. Children and parents were welcomed to Thursday week’s Buddies playgroup meeting by Dorothy Plant and Diane Cooper. ‘Stir Up Sunday’ was Jean Leadbeater’s title when she led the Friday week’s Sunshine Club members meeting. Members talked about autumn, listened to music and had poems from a stories and rhymes book by Beryl Hellewell. Maj Neill led the Sunday week Salvation meeting when she mixed up the ingredients for a ‘Stir up Sunday’ pudding which is to be steamed for 8 hours prior to eating. The worship group and the Messengers group members sang.

Christian Centre

Mrs A. M. Hellewell led yesterday week’s Alpha course meeting. Choir practice on Wednesday week was led by Tracey Foster. Amanda Pell led the prayer meeting. A birthday cake made by Rene Guy, birthday cards and gifts were presented to Gabriel Graves for his 7th birthday.

Early Birds

Children threaded Christmas trees with various materials to create a display, made tactile Christmas trees, snowflake Advent calendars and designed their own Christmas cards. Homework club and activities were led by Becky Fletcher and Pauline Chapman.

Holy Trinity Church

Holy Communion on Sunday week was led by the Rev C. Beresford. Bible readings were by James Taylor and Noreen Maynard. Mrs K. Lindsay was the welcome steward and also took the collection.

Mr D. Maynard gave a sermon entitled, ‘Christ is King.’ Prayers were led by Mrs Helen Hornsby. Refreshments were served by Marjorie Taylor and Janet Downing.
