COMMUNITY NEWS - Kirkby

Sunday week’s mass was taken by Fr F. Higgins. The reader was Mary Clare Endy. Delia McGibbon, Andrew O’Mara-Winson, Jim Turton, Herve Poveda and Jerry Herrington served communion. Maranatha played the music. The offertory procession members were David Tucker, Megan Mcpherson, Caelin Riyadi, Eamon Wyatt, Leia Aye and Delia McGibbon. The collection was taken by Rex Clarke and John Fejfer. Cath Moulton and Jerry Herrington served coffee for parish funds.

Ashfield Chess

The first team had a strong two weeks beating Gambit 3-2 with wins for John Molyneux, Steve Burke and Derek Jarvis. They then drew against Mansfield 2 ½ boards each, Ashfield’s winner was Phil Morgan with Glen Halfpenny, Steve Burke and Andy Toothill all drawing. The cream of the crop, however, was the 4-1 thrashing of University, Ashfield’s winners being Pablo Padilla, John Molyneux and Derek Jarvis. Steve Burke and Glen Halfpenny contributed draws. The second team continued the successful theme against West Bridgford. Geoff Gibson and Jerry Herrington both won with a draw from Alan Robinson. However, they lost against Nottingham Central and again at West Nottingham.

Church of Christ

Geoff Ellis led Sunday week’s morning meeting. Eric Faulks read from the Old Testament. The New Testament reader was Dennis Faulks. Rex Foster was server. Geoff Ellis gave the address. Dennis Faulks led the evening service, guest speaker was Ken Mullan from the Ilkeston church.

St Wilfrid’s Church

The Venerable David Picken, Archdeacon of Newark, celebrated Holy Communion on Sunday week. Jenny Loxston and Simon Hilton were readers. Christina Vardy led prayers. David and Marilyn Ball administered the chalice. Sidesmen were Phyllis and Eddie Newby. Anne Allcock and Barbara Andrews served morning coffee. Ann Hilton led a service of evening prayer.

Friends of Sal Army

Gladys Newall led Monday week’s meeting at the Ashwood Centre. The group offers friendship, conversation and outings. They meet every Monday at 1.30pm. Freda Mills served teas.

3rd Brownies

The Brownies had a ‘Thinking Day’ when they considered Brownies around the world and got together to plan their next week’s activities. Leader Wendy Osborne was assisted by Abbi Grundy. The meeting ended with Brownie Bells.

Spiritualist

Lynda Sills chaired Sunday week’s divine service introducing speaker ‘Trish and Mary’. Ann Burgess, of Eastwood, gave Monday week’s demonstration of clairvoyance led by Diane Martin. Healing was delivered after the meeting by Gary Price and Janet Julian. Committee members led Tuesday week’s awareness class.

Hill Methodist Church

The Mother and Toddler group met on Wednesday week, followed by the Wednesday Fellowship led by Betty Grice who was also the speaker. Joy Franks played the organ. The DIY group worked on the church in the evening. A prayer meeting was held on Saturday week. In the evening, the Mother and Toddler group had a Beetle drive. Joy Jennison led Sunday week’s All Age worship. Music was by the Worship group. Ian Fox and Paul Grice read the lessons. Gordon Bestwick, of Sutton, led the evening service. The readers were Betty Grice and Alan Stone. Joyce Bradshaw played the organ.

Evergreens

Glenys Williams and Joyce Shepherd served lunches on Monday week. Len Fox entertained on the organ. Bingo was played in the afternoon. New players welcome. Games start at 1.30pm. Members played carpet bowls on Tuesday week. Thursday and Friday week’s line and sequence dances were by Walter Jones and Joan Peel. Saturday week’s coffee morning made £197 for centre funds. The next coffee morning is on Saturday 29th March at 10am.

7Cs Christian F’ship

Pastor Maurice England welcomed members to their new venue at the Diamond Centre on Diamond Avenue on Sunday week. Worship was led by David Holloway, Mark Roxburgh, David Thorpe and Tom Ward. Debbie Thorpe led Faith Builder. Mark and Sam Roxburgh with Peter Buxton served communion. David Logsdale gave the address. Midweek Fellowship was at the home of Pastor and Mrs England.

50 Plus

President Amy Butler read a thank you card from member Margaret Snell for the gift of flowers as she recovers from a broken leg. Mary Colley received birthday greetings. Refreshments were served by Madeleine Schnell, Gill Layton and Shirley Hallam. David Woolnough, Katherine Blasdale and Mary Colley organised a quiz.

Forest Street Baptist

Art and Keep Fit classes met on Tuesday week. There was a Deacon’s meeting on Thursday week. Sunday week’s morning service was taken by Pastor Derek Smith, of Arnold. Mervyn Cole-Bowen was reader and also served morning coffee with wife Terri. The Rev Ros Wilkes and helpers ran an afternoon Messy Church session from 4pm. Music for the day was by Margaret and Doreen Homer. Last Monday the Crafty Dabblers craft group met. The Ladies Fellowship was led by Pat Pride who introduced speaker Joy Franks. Doris Hickton played the piano. Doreen Homer served refreshments.

1st Guides

Claire and Ann Sharman, assisted by Elaine Britnell, and senior section leaders designate Libby Butterworth-Smith and Aleah Maltby led a candlelit enrolment for new Guide Alex Arbon. Guides continued with their ‘International Theme’ and Libby reported on her trip to a Guide camp at Sangan in India. The girls decorated their hands with eastern style henna designs and tried Bollywood style dancing.

St Thomas’s Church

The study group met on Wednesday week, a shared parish lunch was then taken. A drop-in session for carers and toddlers was held in the afternoon. John Walker manned the parish office in the evening. The monthly meeting of the Mothers’ Union was held on Thursday week. Debbi Douce organised a pamper evening for mums on Friday week. Sunday week’s family communion was taken by the vicar, the Rev Neil Popham. Reader Chris Manning assisted and also gave the address. Readings and prayers were by Rick Colley. Doreen Dickens played the piano. Sarah Clarke, Sophia Popham and Julie Carr led children’s church. Sandy and Digby Edwards Walsh presented the Elements. Isobel Summerfield and John Cook administered the chalice. Debbie Douce served refreshments in the church hall. The evening ‘Breathing space with God, praying for Kirkby’ was by the vicar.

Rotary

President John McEwen chaired Tuesday week’s meeting, receiving greetings from West Ashfield club by Rotn Mike Lee, from the Hucknall club from Rotn Francis Newenham and from the Sutton in Ashfield club from Rotn Gordon Sugg. President-elect Roger Pursey announced that the club’s quiz team had come third in the local group competition and would now go forward to the district final. He also reminded members of the upcoming Young Chef competition and the What’s it Worth? Antiques valuation event at the Festival Hall from 9.30am on Saturday. The monthly draw was won by Rotns Francis Newenham and Neil Lancashire. Rotn Philip Hurt gave a presentation on the middle term future of the club including immediate measures to increase membership.

Trinity Methodist

The coffee bar was open from Monday to Friday week inclusive. The Forget me Not dementia group met on Monday week, followed by the DVD Keep Fit session. Kirkby Churches Together held early prayers on Tuesday week. Margaret Thorpe led the Tuesday Fellowship. SureStart Messy Play also met. Framework held an advice session on Wednesday week. The Flower arrangers met in the afternoon. A Knitting group meets every Thursday at 10am. Thursday week’s Luncheon club was followed by Open Hands who had a quiz. The My Sight visually impairment group also met. Thursday week’s Ladies group was entertained by Trinity Singers who also rehearsed on Friday week. A general advice session was held on Friday week. Marian Matthews led Sunday week’s service. Jo Makins was church steward and also led Family Time. The door steward was Jenny Wilcock. Margaret Hensby lit the candle. A drama reading was given by Ken Hawkins, Margaret Thorpe, Jo Makins and Mike Berry. The offering was collected by Teresa Rawding and Jean Wykes. The organist was Fay Shackleton. Margaret Hensby and Margaret Campbell served morning coffee in aid of Heart Research UK. To mark the start of Fair Trade fortnight Nancy Shipley manned a Traid Craft stall. Church flowers were donated by Sharon Lee.
