Methodist Church

Irene Shawcroft took the service on Sunday morning at the church. Music accompanying the service was played by Enid Marsh. Members visited Rainworth Methodists for their evening service.

Tuesday Fellowship

The meeting on Tuesday at Farnsfield St Michael’s Church was led by Sue Brookes.

This month is the 95th birthday of Farnsfield W I. To celebrate this there was a meal at The Lion in the village which was attended by 28 members and two guests from the County Federation, Jane Jefferson, Chairman and Jenny Bailey, editor of The Hornblower. There was a very short business meeting to keep members up to date with activities. The April meeting is on 3rd April at 7 30pm and is the annual meeting.

Horticultural Society

The society is preparing for its spring show on Saturday 12th April at the Village Centre. The schedules will be available from local shops. The event will be open to the public after 12.30pm

Rainworth

Over 50s Club

Mr C. Dodsworth welcomed 102 members to their meeting on Tuesday week at the Rainworth Miners’ Welfare. Mr C. Dodsworth was the MC for dancing and the spot waltz winners were Mr and Mrs Green. Serving refreshments to the members were Mrs E. Baxter, Mrs M. Wood Mrs R. Dodsworth and Mrs B. Murphy. Mr R. Holmes called the bingo and the ticket sellers were Mrs A. Plastow and Mrs O. Parkin. The MC for dominoes was Mr J. Saunders and the winners were Mr and Mrs F. Straw. The competition winner was Mrs L. Parkin. The weekly raffle was held with the prizes donated by the club, and Mesdames, Dodsworth, Woods, Blackwell, Murphy, Newberry, Tomlinson, Straw, Dean, Higgins, Dennett, Clipston, Simpson, Prior, Purdey, Turton, Clarke, Maggio, Blackwell, Evans, Corden, Millward, Allison, Richardson, Etheridge, Baxter, Polkey, and Dorren. There are currently membership opportunities available, anyone interested please call in on Tuesday afternoons.

4th Rainbows

The Rainbows met at SS Simon and Jude’s on Friday evening when they talked about the country, Spain. They coloured a Spanish flag and completed a word search, practising the Spanish language. They also talked about Spanish Brownie law and uniform and also played games. They had a discussion about visiting a fire station and decided they would like to visit the one in Blidworth. On Sunday week, 4th Rainworth Rainbows attended a thinking day service with all the other Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Mansfield. Thinking Day is a day of celebration in honour of Robert Baden Powell, who founded the Guiding movement. During the afternoon, the Rainbows made crafts to do with Russia and learned about Girl guiding in the country. The girls made new friends and came away with some great crafts.

The group, which meets every second Wednesday from 10am-noon in the month at Rainworth Village Hall, is quickly establishing itself. Jennie Roberts will chair the meetings and the most recent speaker has been Dr Ian Campbell who spoke on the subject of ‘You are what you eat’. The interest groups are well attended. There is always a book-stall at the meeting to buy and exchange reading matter.

St George’s RC Church

At mass on Saturday evening, Andrew Storey, Jordon and Rachel Boulton and Lilly David assisted Fr Christopher Thomas at the altar. There were readings from Ken Daley and Isabelle Thompson and Jackie Massey, Frances Allsop, Brian McDonagh and John Storey were Offertory bearers. Eucharistic ministers were Andrew Storey, Angela Storey and Michael Boulton.

Methodist Church

The weekly Slimming World group met on Tuesday with the WeightWatcher group and Rainworth Leisure Artist group meeting on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday evening, there was an ‘Ashing and Communion’ service led by the Reverends David and Barbara Greenwood, Bob Jones, and Ann Anderson. Readers were Barbara Sutton and Steve Cree. Margaret Toon played the music during the service. Wednesday Messy church resumes today. The uniformed Rainbow and Brownie groups met on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Mansfield Artist group met with the regular coffee morning also taking place. On Sunday morning, Barrie Richmond led the service and there were readings from Barbara Sutton and Judith Dakin. The Sunday school group was led by Vanessa Lewin and Alan Mosley. Flowers decorating the church were given by Jean Grant and Christine Daniel welcomed everyone to the service. The Sunday evening ‘United’ service was led by the Rev Arthur Spencer and included readings from Barbara Sutton and Allan Mosley. Margaret Toon played the music at both Sunday services.

SS Simon and Jude’s

Morning prayer services on both Tuesday and Thursday and also Thursday’s Holy Communion last week were led by the Rev Clare Tyack who, along with Marilyn Brown, also led Thursday’s vestry hour. On Thursday evening, the Simon music group continued rehearsals for a forthcoming charity booking in Mansfield. The regular weekly coffee mornings were held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings and on Sunday morning Holy Communion was led by the Rev’d Tyack. Marilyn Brown gave the sermon with Gordon Foster play- the music and also reading a lesson. Rebecca Smith and Leila Southcott also read. Marie Weallans led the prayers. The theme of the service for the first Sunday of Lent was ‘Temptation and Forgiveness’

On Monday week the meeting was opened by Mrs M. Brailsford. Mrs K. White, Mrs J. Pitt and Mrs M. Wood served the members with refreshments. Tickets were sold by Mrs J. Dodsworth and she also called the bingo. Mrs M. Cooper organised and called the quiz and the winner was Mrs M. Wood. Bingo winners were Mesdames B. Poyser, M. Wood, M. Fletcher, A. Farr, M. Brailsford, S. Layland, J. Pitt, and Messrs K. Cooper and E. Ufton. Raffle winners were Mesdames S. Cutts, J. Alexander, T. Jukes, V. Greaves, M. Fletcher, A. Farr, and Mr E. Ufton. Members celebrated the birthday of Mrs S. Layland.

St Andrew’s Church

The Morning Prayer services were held on Monday and Wednesday led by the Rev Hazel Robinson, who also led Wednesday’s morning Communion. Followed by a short service in the chapel, Vestry Hour is a time for when people want to book weddings, ask for banns to be read, book baptisms or who would just like to pop in and talk to the clergy. It is held at St Andrew’s on Wednesdays from 6-7pm and this week was led by Angela Penny. The church is hosting ‘Experience Easter’ on Thursday 20th March at St Andrew’s Mission, for the children of Blidworth Oaks School.

St Mary’s Church

Leading the service on Sunday morning was Stephanie Smart. Assisting and also leading prayers was the Rev Clare Tyack. Also assisting with the service was Marilyn Brown and she also gave the sermon. There were Old Testament readings from Stephen Fox and New Testament readings from Cath McCready. Carol Brown gave readings from the Gospel and Gordon Foster played music to accompany the service.

Methodist Church

The Artist group met at the church on Tuesday. A Churches Together Lent course has been planned for Blidworth and Rainworth between 7-8.30pm on five Wednesday evenings throughout Lent. Today, Blidworth Methodists will be hosting the meeting and another planned on the 2nd April on the theme of Contemplative Prayer. Karen O’Hara led the weekly prayer group at the church on Thursday and Saturday’s breakfast meeting was a success. The Sanctuary upstairs was open as usual for anyone who wished to take ‘time out’ in quiet reflection, private prayer or needed to speak to someone in confidence. On Sunday morning, Dawn Vickers led the ‘All age worship’ service with church members welcomed by Diane Richmond who was at door. Vanessa Crane played the music for the service and Olivia Crane read lessons. Flowers decorating the church were donated by Pat Goddard. There was a discussion service in the evening led by the Rev David Greenwood. The Rev Barbara Greenwood will be running in the London Marathon on 13th April. Walking Group

David Smith led this week’s 4.5-mile walk from Blidworth Woods to the Burnt Stump Country Park, attended by 10 people. The walks are free.The Sunday walk details are sent via text on a Saturday evening. To be included, leave a name and mobile number on 07703631816.

Heritage Society

The annual meeting was attended by 27 members and guests. It was agreed that future subscription rates would be reduced to £5 per annum and that the meetings would cost £2 to cover expenses. The following will remain on the committee - John Smallwood - chairman; Alan Higgins - vice chairman;Eric Hall - treasurer; Dale Smallwood - secretary; Sheila Hall, Alan Ormston and Gordon Turner. Derek Wilson resigned from the committee as a full time member, but will become an honorary committee member. Margaret Marias was co-opted to the committee. Alan Higgins presented the first part of the archive of recently discovered photographs of the village from 1991. It will be continued next month. The next three meetings will be on 1st April - Kevin Topham - Secrets of Dukes Wood and Crude oil production in Eakring; 6th May - Mr Clarke - The Pentrich Uprising; 3rd June - Ian Morgan - Within sight of The Gibbet. Meetings start at 7 pm. Ample parking is available and new members are welcome. There is normally a small charge of £2. which includes refreshments. Anyone who has any photographs of the village and its people that the group can copy to add to the archive should email [email protected]. Patient Participation

The group is planning to hold regular events on the fourth Monday of each month. The next is on 31st March, admission £3. On the 22nd March at 7.30pm, the group is holding a concert featuring the Ravenshead Swing Band at the Sherwood Forest Community Church. Tickets cost £5 from Adcocks Financial Services in Ravenshead shopping precinct or by ringing 07914 116459 . Refreshments will be available and there will be a raffle. Proceeds will be for the purchase of defibrillators.

St Giles’ Church

On Sunday morning at the church, the Rev David McCullough led an ‘All age worship’ morning service. Cathy Clay gave a reading and Roy Blackshaw played the music for the service. Following the service, pancake tossing took place before went to the Village Hall for a coffee morning.

Village News

More than £250 was raised for Village Hall funds at the coffee morning on Sunday following the service at St Giles. The PCC made a presentation to long-term villagers David and Irene Young who are leaving the village to settle in Rainworth. A photograph of Edingley Church by James Clay was presented to them. The Farnsfield Daffodil festival will take place over the weekend of 5th and 6th April at The Old Schoolroom, from 11am-4pm on each day. Refreshments and cream teas will be served. Various competitions involving daffodils and these will be judged during the weekend. Entry forms from coffee mornings held at the venue.
