Community hails Stags' hotel plans

Plans for a Hilton hotel at Mansfield Town FC's stadium have been hailed by residents '“ although business leaders have said they would prefer it closer to the town centre.

The club has confirmed talks are taking place with the international hotel chain Hilton over plans to build the only chain hotel in Mansfield.

They hope to build a 100-room hotel on land next to the One Call Stadium on Quarry Lane, Mansfield.

A spokesman for the Mansfield Business Improvement District said the organisation supports the idea, but would have prefered a more central location.

He said: “While a development of this nature is to be welcomed, as it should prove to be a benefit to Mansfield, the BID would of course prefer it if such a hotel were to be built within the BID’s area.”

The BID covers most of the area inside of Mansfield;s inner ring road.

Meanwhile, Russell Jones, chairman of Mansfield & Ashfield 2020 business development group, said: “Businesses have been screaming out for a quality hotel in the town for years .

“It will help them grow and bring more business here.”

The closest hotel to the proposed site is family-run The Midland Hotel, on Station Road, Mansfield. which has 27 rooms.

The closest Travelodge to Mansfield is in Sutton.

A spokesman for the Hilton chain said: “Hilton is in an exciting phase of growth and we are looking at a number of locations across the UK in which to introduce our brands.

“However, we have no new projects to confirm at this time.”

Mark Stevenson, head of communications at Mansfield Town, said: “These are very exciting plans for the football club, the town and the people of Mansfield.

“Plans are still in an embryonic stage, though we hope to provide a further update later next month.”
