I launched the ‘Why I love Ashfield’ competition with the help of the Chad and I’m going to be showcasing the best entries from kids in our local schools in my column each month.

I’ve already got two winners, both from Hillocks Primary School and they are Alfie Parker, 11, and Tianey Brearley, 11. This month you can read Tianey’s and next month Alfie’s - ‘Sutton lawn is one of the many places you can go. On Sutton lawn you can feed the ducks, go fishing and take your dog for a walk. You can also go to the outside gym, play football or go skate boarding. At our library there are lots of books for you to choose from. If you have a little one you can choose one of our many children’s books and then you can take them home and read them. We even have our own radio station. How lucky are we?

At the leisure centre you can go, ice skating, to the gym, in the swimming pool and you can even go to get swimming lessons or ice skating lessons. If you’re between 10 and 15 you can go to the ice skating disco.

There is no place I would rather live than here.’

I love the pride that both young and old have for Ashfield and I’m just as proud to the MP. What I like is that there’s a real community spirit and folk are fiercely loyal and always willing to back someone when it’s for a good cause.

Lifelong Kirkby resident, Jay Staniland, works for the local NHS and through his work he told me how he has become a passionate supporter of the work of Action Medical Research for Children.

The charity does great work providing funding to improve the health and lives of very poorly children.

Jay has never run a marathon before, so it will be a massive achievement.

He will need to dig deep and if anyone reading this can too then let’s give him all thesupport we can. To sponsor him http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/jaystaniland

The main job of an MP is to stand up and fight your constituents’ battles. I seem to be in a never ending battle with HM Revenue & Customs and they are probably as fed up of me as I am them but I can assure them I’ll continue to bug them while ever I have people telling me of the problems they’ve had.

This week I made sure one lady from Sutton finally got to keep the £1,209.60 she was entitled to through tax credits, despite officials repeatedly trying to claw the money back.

The amount of casework I get concerning HMRC suggests to me there are others out there with similar problems, if so give me a call.
