Collection ‘back by popular demand’

Old favourites are back on display at Mansfield Museum, following calls from the public for the venue to exhibit its much-loved ornithology collection.

The exhibition, entitled The Tin Tabernacle after the old nickname for the original building , a converted corrugated iron church, features many original specimens from Edwardian times, when the museum first opened.

Now based in Leeming Street, the museum adopted a more child-friendly approach more than a decade ago, and the collection has been kept safe and sound in storage ever since.

But the museum has now put the collection back on display in a bid to ‘satisfy the curiosity’ of older visitors who often ask staff if the museum still has the collection, a spokesman said.

The Tin Tabernacle will run until Saturday, 21st June, at Mansfield Museum. Admission is free.
