“This has not been an easy decision, the college has tried many initiatives to increase trade over the last 10 years and our loyal customers have stuck by us at all times.

“Sadly despite steady investment by the college we have been unable to keep pace with sustained increases in costs.

“Our customers and staff at the coffee shop have helped provide many learners with the opportunity to gain valuable skills and work experience, serving food and drink in a real work environment.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that the closure may cause, and would like to thank our loyal customers for their continued and valued support.

“While the decision has been made to close the coffee shop, the charity and other areas of Portland College Enterprises Ltd continue to thrive, and the college is happy to see these areas creating new opportunities for growth in the future.

“We have ambitious plans to further develop community services onsite, such as the planned Woodlands Activity Trail, and in the community where we recently launched the Mansfield town centre based Portland Pathways.”

Mr Johnstone dded: “Due to the size of the college as an employer we have several roles vacant so we are currently looking at redeployment opportunities.”

Teh coffee shop has been open to the general public seven days a week, providing tea, coffee, cold drinks and light refreshments all year round, only closing over Christmas.
