Coal Authority give Garibaldi a lesson

Students at a Forest Town school were visited by industrial leaders on Friday to showcase employment opportunities available to local youngsters.

Philip Lawrence, chief executive from the Coal Authority, visited Garibaldi College to work with students in years eight and nine.

Mr Lawrence started the day by talking to students about the work the authority does and what opportunities are available for school-leavers when they finish full-time education.

Students then divided up into small groups and created their own viral marketing campaign, aimed at recruiting more youngsters , a school spokesman said.

The best group from each class then went through to the final where students pitched their ideas to school leaders, with the winners receiving a £15 cinema voucher.

Headteacher Chris James told Chad: “This was a great opportunity for our students to experience the world of work. I was so proud of the teamwork, the quality of the presentations and the confidence they all showed.”

The event was organised through the Chad-supported Career Champions initiative, run by the Mansfield Learning Partnership (MLP), Mansfield 2020 and A-Star Media.

Career teacher Neil Holbrook added: “We work closely with the MLP to encourage employers to come into schools, as we feel the more local businesses we work with the more our students see just how much opportunity there is around the Mansfield area.”
