Club for the elderly in appeal for funding

Founded in 2001, the Cornwater Club now runs three days a week and offers a range of activities for elderly people from around Nottinghamshire from its Main Road base.

But members say they are struggling to fund the club’s current commitments and are urging local residents to support a fundraising appeal to avoid a cut back in services.

Chairman Dr Peter Rose said: “It is very clear from the comments we receive from our members that the Cornwater Club provides a lifeline for them - without it they would spend day after day alone in their own homes.

“We are appealing to the local community and will be directly contacting homes in Blidworth, Ravenshead and Rainworth to support us.

“We do appreciate that during these difficult economic times many people’s income is under pressure, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

“We actively generate income from the Cornwater Club Charity Shop, lottery and friends, but due to reduced grants we now need to seek this additional help from the community.”

The cost per member per day is £30 , with the OAP contributing £10, with the remainder subsidised by the club.

Club member Beryl Hind (96) told Chad: “To take it from me would be to deprive me of life itself.

“I live alone and it is my only social contact with other people”

Residents can make a donation by going to www.cornwaterclub.co.uk or join the charity’s lottery for £1 per week.

The lottery gives players the opportunity of winning £100 every week and £1,000 every six months and provides a valuable source of income for the club.
